A Bespoke School Planner – 2 Questions Teachers Should Ask

Published on February 26, 2019

When we initially speak with potential new customers about their particular school planner needs, we recommend they ask themselves two questions:
1 what do we want our school planners to actually do?
2 how do we want our homework planners to be used effectively?
Schools who put real value on the usability of their school planners usually want them to be multi-functional,  meaning generic products won’t cut the mustard. In these instances, its a bespoke school planner all the way and our Made for You bespoke service ticks all the boxes!

fingerscrossedYour school’s wish list

We work with all types of schools – many with a unique wish list, over the years we’ve had all sorts of requests like:

  • Can we call our school diary a Student Passport, Student Journal or Student Organiser?
  • Can we have a ‘funky’ school planner cover design?
  • Can we include our school strap line/motto on every page?
  • Can we include our rewards system into our weekly diary?
  • Can we incorporate a toilet pass into our weekly diary?
  • Can we have days of the week in Polish, Urdu or other international languages?

A real connection to your schoolMFE_by and for you-02

Use our Made for you bespoke service and you’ll benefit from our highly experienced school planner creative team. We offer total flexibility in design, page layout and content – no limits.  We work with all our customers to produce school diaries which fits their exact needs, school brand and type. Our goal is to create an instantly recognised planner which has a real connection to your school and will be effectively used and valued by your students.
So, think about your current school homework planner as an example:

Your planner cover design

1 what do we want our school planners to actually do?
2 how do we want our homework planners to be used effectively?
Bespoke school planner cover designs are a great opportunity to create awareness of your school brand and the tone you want to set to your students when using their school planners.  For example we’re regularly asked by our customers to include a photo of students on their school planner cover design – we don’t advise this as an appropriate option – it invites your students to potentially deface the cover and immediately devalues their worth.  Our creative team design covers which embrace a school’s values and vision, whilst being appealing to students and their specific age group.

Your personal content

2 how do we want our homework planners to be used effectively?
You’ll also need to consider the way in which you communicate personalised school information to your students in your bespoke homework planners. This needs to be clear and concise and attractively presented – 16 pages of bland words just won’t engage with your students.  So, again on the theme of your school brand we’ll offer advice on the most appropriate typeface to reflect your school’s values and vision.  For instance, a more traditional school might choose Times New Roman, a primary school might choose a more plain and larger (san serif) typeface such as Helvetica or even Comic Sans to add the fun factor.
We recommend elements of your school brand are carried right through your school planners, e.g. display your strap line or motto on every page – this helps promote your school’s values and vision to your students. With our prices including the school planner specialist services of our creative team, this means we can offer advice on how this will work best for you.

1 what do we want our school planners to actually do?
2 how do we want our homework planners to be used effectively?
Your school might use a full colour school diary that includes content from third party advertising; you purchased them at a great price – but are they really up to scratch?  If you want your students to use their homework planners for effective homework planning and communication – do they actually value this type of diary or is the sponsored advertising distracting from their effective use?
Other aspects to consider are: does your current homework diary design give your students enough space for writing in each day?  Does it contain all the features you need for effective use of your school’s specific home/school communications? Does it include your week 1 and 2 or week A/B school year – we can incorporate any of these features into your bespoke homework diary design.
Over the years we’ve produced 100’s of different bespoke school diary styles – the most popular choices can be seen on our website giving you inspiration and showing how flexible we can be with this important feature. Again, our bespoke homework diary creative team are more than happy to advise you on a school diary layout that really works for your school.

papersizes_2Your school planner size

1 what do we want our school planners to actually do?
2 how do we want our homework planners to be used effectively?
With the school pocket planner now in demand alongside the ever popular A5 Homework Planner – trust us, size is important! It’s another factor to consider when deciding what’s the best bespoke homework planner for your school.
A5 size has been around forever and is still the most popular size for schools.  Some of our customers have ‘downsized’ to bespoke pocket planners or an A6 size – however, we always offer them the same advice – ask yourself those two key questions:
1 what do we want our school planners to actually do?
2 how do we want our homework planners to be used effectively?
Yes, an A5 school planner gives your students plenty of space to write and record their homework.
Yes, A6 and a pocket planner are more portable for students to carry around – but be aware, these smaller sizes don’t offer as much space to write or hold the same amount of content on one page as an A5 School Planner.
We recommend a bespoke school pocket planner is purchased by those schools who just need to communicate key information to their students, not to record lots of homework planning.
So there you have it, buying your school homework planners shouldn’t be based on cost alone, there are many more factors to consider if you want them to have real value and be seen as an integral link in your school homework communications.  If your answer to our two key questions is pretty specific, then you’re definitely looking at a bespoke school planner to fit your school’s needs.
